CSR

The world saw the first signs of Machani Somappa’s resolute commitment toward ensuring economic welfare and social wellbeing as early as 1938, when the 34-year-old set up a relief center for the famine afflicted farmers of Yemmiganur. Back then, the term CSR as is freely used today, was nowhere to be found in the corporate dictionary. In the years that followed, his involvement and association with various activities that addressed the cause of social upliftment remained a constant preoccupation.

In 1970, his persistent efforts to address social issues culminated in the institution of MG Charities. Through the aegis of MG Charities (registered in 1974 and started by Machani Ramanna), Machani Somappa blazed a glowing trail of community service, donating large sums to the Yemmiganur Government Hospital. Accordingly, the main hospital as well as its pediatric ward is named after Machani Gangappa as “Machani Gangappa Government Hospital, Yemmiganur.” The Machani Somappa Girls High School, constructed in Machani Somappa’s memory was donated to the Kurnool Zillah Parishad. Another school, Machani Somappa English Medium School was started to facilitate local students to obtain high rank and gain admission to medical and engineering colleges.

Machani Somappa’s deep concern for the country’s future— which he firmly believed was in the hands of its children and youth—shines through several projects that MG Charities has embarked upon. Jointly and severally, these projects address vital needs like education, nutrition, safe drinking water and healthcare for the underprivileged and downtrodden.

Today, MG Charities, with M. R. Ramesh as its driving force, runs projects that aim to lead society to a more equal status, where economic and social disparities will someday cease to exist.

From milk, breakfast and lunch to school books, everything is provided free in this school.

The Machani Ramanna Drinking Water Services

provides clean and safe drinking water to people in Yemmiganur town and surrounding villages. On a daily basis, its clean and safe drinking water benefits more than 2000 families and 2500 school children. On an average, this unit supplies upwards of 4,60,000 liters of safe and clean drinking water per month.

The Machani Buddamma Gangappa Medical Service

provides free medical services to the underprivileged people of Yemmiganur town and surrounding villages. This unit conducts an average of 600 health checkups every month for the designated beneficiaries.

MG Charities also has to its credit land donations to Zilla Parishad School, Mugati Village (6.05 Acres), Mandal Parishad Elementary School, Yemmiganur (15 Cents), and Mandal Parishad Elementary School, Jaladgi Village (50 Cents).

The MGB Group continues with the good work and has added a number of fresh initiatives:

  • Annual planting of trees to increase green cover
  • Sponsorship of the municipal corporation’s e-toilets
  • Sponsorship of the municipal corporation’s tree guards
  • Sponsorship of computers for deaf and dumb children
  • Free distribution of 12 thousand notebooks every year to municipal schools in and around Nellore
  • Conducting regular blood donation and free medical checkup camps
  • Large donations to flood relief funds
  • Donation of Rs. 10 lakhs to Chinnari Heart Foundation for conducting free heart surgeries for underprivileged children

In addition to MG Charities, the Group makes regular donations to various schools through the Association for the Advancement of Education, Yemmiganur (registered 1943).

The Association for the Advancement of Education, Yemmiganur is yet another milestone in the glittering career of Machani Somappa. The Association was formed with the primary objective of enhancing education facilities in and around Yemmiganur. Over the years the Association has put together a long list of achievements, starting with the construction, in 1953, of the building that houses the present Junior College, by collecting donations from local citizens.

In 1958, the Association added monetary contribution to a Central Government grant for the construction of an Auditorium-cum-Recreation Hall.

For the construction of the building that houses the Machani Somappa Zilla Parishad Girls High school, the Association secured an eight acre plot of land in the heart of the town in the abandoned Mahadevappa Tank, free of cost from the State Government.

The Association has played a significant role in supporting the cause of education at both primary and secondary levels. It has donated liberally, not only for starting schools in Yemmiganur but also in Nandavaram, Nagaladinne, Gudekal and Mantralayam. In addition, it has made donations to several upper primary schools.

On several occasions, the Association has come forward to help meet the growing needs of education, such as increase in the number of pupils. It contributed handsomely toward starting the Zilla Parishad High School for Boys. In Kurnool, the Association purchased and handed over a 7.5 acre plot of land for the Zilla Parishad School and also provided it monetary assistance for construction of the school building under the NREP. Further, the Association has donated land to Devibetta Primary school, and has aided the Mahayogi Lakshmamma Government Degree College, Yemmiganur, with land donation as well as building construction.

The Association owes its achievements principally to the untiring efforts of its founder Machani Somappa, whose service motto was assimilated and continued by his brother Shri M. Ramanna—the association’s next president—in carrying out educational services and in furthering all its activities.
